4 Cricketers Who Had Criminal Cases Levelled Against Them

The cricketing fraternity has been quite rocked after Mohammed Shami was accused of having extra-marital affairs by none other than his wife Hasin Jahan.

Mrs Shami levelled sensational allegations against her husband, claiming that the pacer was having extra-marital affairs with several women. She even alleged that Shami was physically assaulting and threatening her over a period of almost two years.

Jahan posted several screenshots on social media to back her claims. The pictures showed the chats Shami allegedly had with these women. She has also filed a police complaint against Shami at the city police headquarters at Lalbazar.

“He has affairs with multiple women. Many are from other parts of India while some are residents of Pakistan and countries in Europe. He used to spend time with them in different hotels while on tour. He used to chat with them using video apps,” Jahan had said.
Not surprisingly, the case has caught attention of almost everyone.

So here we are taking a look at four such cricketers who were dragged in big controversies:

4. Rubel Hossain:

Just a couple of months before the 2015 World Cup, the Bangladesh pacer was charged with rape by actress Naznin Akter Happy. The actress filed a complaint against the cricketer who was selected in Bangladesh’s 15-man squad. Happy had imposed charges of  ‘rape’ and a ‘false promise of marriage’.

Hossain was consequently arrested. However, he was later granted bail until the end of the World Cup. The case then came to an end when Happy withdrew the charges after Hossain’s match-winning performance against England in the World Cup.

3. Navjot Singh Sidhu

Navjost Singh Sidhu was involved in a huge controversy in 2006. The former India opener, who had retired from the game by then, was convicted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court after a scuffle claimed the life of Gurnam Singh, a resident of Patiala. In an FIR registered in 1988, it was alleged that Navjot Sidhu and Bhupinder Singh Sandhu smashed Gurnam Singh after dragging him out his car.

Both the convicts were were sentenced to three-year imprisonment and were asked to pay a hefty fine of Rs 1 lakh. However, Sidhu appealed against the High court verdict in the Supreme Court, which suspended the previous judgment in 2007.

2. Yuvraj Singh:

One of the most loved cricketers in the country, Yuvraj had found himself in hot waters after Akanksha Sharma, the ex-wife of his bother Zorawar Singh – named her husband, mother-in-law Shabnam Singh and brother-in-law Yuvraj Singh in a domestic violence petition filed last year.

Akanksha did not level any serious allegation against Yuvraj but had accused him of being a ‘mute spectator’. She had claimed that her husband and mother-in-law inflicted ‘mental and financial torture’ upon her. But fortunately, no legal actions were taken against Yuvraj in the case.

1. Ben Stokes:

Stokes was all over the news last year for all the wrong reasons. The England allrounder was charged with affray after being involved in a late night brawl in Bristol. CCTV footage had shown the allrounder punching a man repeatedly. As a result of the incident, Stokes had to miss the entire Ashes followed by the ODI and T20I series against Australia.

The ECB granted Stokes permission to play for England only after he pleaded ‘not guilty’ before the court. He returned to his national side in the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this year.
