Indian cricketer, Ajinkya Rahane, was honoured by Maharashtra government for his contribution to the game. Since the player was not available, the right-handed batter has been presented with the award. He was honoured a day after the ceremony took place.

Rahane collected a trophy, certificate and a cash prize of Rs 3 Lakh, later.

Rohit Sharma was also given the same honour. But, since he was not in the state, he could also not make it to the function.

Rohit is currently featuring in the bilateral series against South Africa. As of now, he is participating in the three-match Twenty20 International series.

Rahane is not a member of the T20I side and returned to the country. Also,  Shreyas Iyer, Mohammad Shami and Kedar Jadhav are back to India.

Iyer is all set to play for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017/18.

However, Rahane will not be playing the tournament. He was with the team during Test series too and need some time to take rest. He might play the upcoming Deodhar Trophy and Irani Cup too.

Indian team’s next series is in Sri Lanka, which is a T20I competition.

Since he is not the part of the T20I side, Rahane will be available for Nidahas Trophy. It will also give him time to practice ahead of India Premier League.

Talking of Rohit, the other awardee, he might be rested for the Sri Lanka series. However, merely if the selectors decide to give another player a chance.

Also, it can help KL Rahul to open the innings in few matches, in Rohit’s absence. The tri-series in Sri Lanka is a chance for selectors to test out KL Rahul.

Meanwhile, Pravin Amre, the former Indian cricketer turned coach, was also awarded during the function. He was awarded the coach of the year award (2016-17).

Amre received a trophy, certificate and cash prize of Rs 1 Lakh. Players from other sports were also honoured during the event since the 2014-15 season.
