The first ODI between Australia and England at the MCG saw several ODI batting records getting broken, courtesy England’s opening batsman, Jason Roy.

Roy scored a brilliant 180 off 151 balls while chasing 305 in the second innings, and helped the tourist record their first win in over two months Down Under.

Having lost the Ashes 4-0, the tourists came into the match to avenge the beating they had suffered and looking at their ODI record off-late, England looked as the favourites to win the match.

England won the toss and put Australia into bat in the first ODI at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia posted a competitive total of 304/8 in the first innings which the tourists chased down in 48.5 and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Roy took the attack back to the Australian bowling line-up of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. England posted 50 runs in first four overs of the innings.

Roy completed his fifty in just 32 balls, which is now the fastest by an English batsman against Australia in One Day Internationals. Roy was dismissed on 180 when the team needed 24 more runs for victory.

With this score of 180, the right-handed batsman now holds the record for the highest score for an English batsman in One Day Internationals, breaking the record of 171 held by his opening partner Alex Hales.

Scoring 180, Roy also leapfrogged Quinton De Kock’s score of 178 and now holds the record for the second highest ODI score by a batsman against Australia behind Rohit Sharma’s score of 209 in Bangalore in 2013.

Roy now has the record for the highest score at the MCG but is just behind West Indian batsman Chris Gayle on the list of the highest scorers in Australia. Roy’s 180 is second and just behind Gayle’s 215 against Zimbabwe in Canberra in 2015 World Cup.

It is also the highest score by a visiting batsman in a run-chase in Australia, and also the highest score by any batsman in a run chase against the mighty Aussies.
