India all-rounder, Axar Patel,  will lead Gujarat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Zonal League. The tournament will be a dress rehearsal for him before he flies out to South Africa for the ODI series.

Along with Axar, leggie,  Piyush Chawla, India A player, Priyank Panchal have also been named. Surprisingly, the name of Siddharth Desai was absent from the list, who was the second highest wicket-taker for Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy.

The T20 tournament is a platform for the players especially Piyush Chawla, to perform well and put a case in front of the franchises before the IPL auction. However, it will just be a rehearsal for Axar rather than attracting franchises as he was retained by Kings XI Punjab on the retention day.

Surprisingly, he was the only player which the franchise decided to retain. He was paid an amount of Rs. 12.5 Crore.  Axar will just play Zonal League and will depart for the ODI series after the end of the tournament.

Gujarat will be without the services of Parthiv Patel too, who is with the Test squad in South Africa. He is expected to get a place in the playing XI only if Wriddhiman Saha sits out of any game.

Gujarat will face Maharashtra, Mumbai, Baroda, and Saurashtra in the first phase of the tournament.

Squad: Axar Patel (Captain), Priyank Panchal, Rohit Dahiya, Rujul Bhatt, Ishwar Chaudhary, Piyush Chawla, Chintan Gaja, Chirag Gandhi, Bhargav Merai, Chirag Parmar, Dhruv Raval, Santosh, Shinde, Kshitij Patel, Jayveer Parmar, Karan Patel.

Sachin Baby will lead Kerala in the upcoming Zonal T20 league. Kerala include players like Sanju Samson, Jalaj Saxena, Basil Thampi, Arun Karthik and Vishnu Vinod to name a few.
