Few days after receiving the devastating news of his wife suffering from breast cancer, veteran Australia batsman Michael Klinger is all set for an emotional and earlier than expected return to the ongoing Big Bash League.

The right-handed batsman got named in Perth Scorchers’ 13-man squad for the Boxing Day showdown with the Melbourne Stars.

Klinger had skipped the defending champions season-opener against the Sydney Sixers to be with his ailing wife and family in the tough times. Klinger had written an emotional open letter, making it clear that cricket was secondary to him at the moment and that he would always choose his family over the game.

“Playing cricket, right at this moment, is secondary,” Klinger had written in the letter.

“It still may happen, because Cindy wants me to play and says it will be a good distraction for her and the kids to see me do so, either on TV or at #TheFurnace.  But, by my choice, if playing clashes with any appointments or treatments, or if Cindy or the kids need me, I will be by their side,” he had added.

The 37-year old’s absence, meanwhile, had given the Scorchers’ team-management a lot to ponder, as they were already missing some notable players. The likes of Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Bancroft are on national duty, currently playing in the Ashes.

Moreover, Sam Whiteman, who opened the innings in the tournament last year, is also unavailable this season due to a long-term finger injury.

However, the Scorchers managed to win their season-opener in the absence of the big names and are now all set to get bolstered by Klinger’s presence. The opening batsman had played a pivotal role in Scorchers’ title-winning campaign last season by scoring 334 runs including an unbeaten 71 in the final.
