South Australia speedster, Chadd Sayers is in line for a possible return to the Australia Test squad.

Head coach Darren Lehmann backed Sayers stating him as the logical selection. Meanwhile, the Australian squad to fly to South Africa this Thursday for the practice games.

Sayers is likely to replace Jackson Bird, who injured himself during Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland in Brisbane. Bird left the field immediately holding his hamstring.

Update on Bird’s injury:

Bird underwent two inconclusive scans and was due to be assessed today in Melbourne. Bird played the fourth Ashes Test on the back of the prolific summer in the absence of the injured Mitchell Starc. He was picked in the squad, as the likely replacement for the pace trio.

Jackson’s being assessed by the medical staff today so we’ll make a call on that in the next 24 hours and see how he goes,” Lehmann said to cricket.com.au.

Meanwhile, Lehmann wanted Bird to play the tour game, which shortens the recovery period. Also, Lehmann stated he wanted a fully fit squad. The practice will start from February 22 in Benoni.

Sayers the likely replacement:

Sayers is the highest wicket-taker in the domestic Sheild games for the last 18 months. He bagged a record 60 wickets in the 2016-17 season. However, consistently being in line, Sayers is yet to win a Baggy Green cap.

We’ll replace him if required. The logical (replacement) is probably Chadd Sayers, but we’ll sit as a selection panel and work that out,” Lehmann said.

Sayers had a disappointing time during Redbacks loss to Victoria. Meanwhile, Sayers has the ability to be a potential Test bowler.

Sayers wants a clarity:

Sayers admitted not being on the squad is disappointing. However, he wants to have some clarity on where he stands in Cricket Australia’s eyes.

I have tried to call (chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns),” said Sayers to 5AA. “Hopefully he gets back to me tonight and I can have a chat to him and can get some clarity on how Jhye Richardson, who has only played five Shield games, was picked ahead of me,” Sayers added.

I’d like to know where I stand in Cricket Australia’s eyes and where I can get in their side. It’s quite hard to take at the moment. I’m just disappointed and just want some clarity,” Sayers mentioned.

Hohn’s praise for Sayers:

Hohns praised Sayers for his recent form after naming the squad. However, he mostly mentioned the selection was a matter of balance.

Chadd is performing well, as he always does, but with Jackson Bird there he has the jump on Chadd at the moment, there’s no doubt about that,” Hohns said.

We have him, Josh Hazlewood is a well-renowned seam bowler, then we have the good pace of Starc, Cummins and Jhye Richardson,” he concluded.
