The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to put Mohammed Shami’s central contract on hold until all accusations are thoroughly investigated.

Meanwhile, a BCCI official reportedly said the decision was not unanimous. However, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) took the final decision once they heard the audio tape released by Hasin Jahan.

Hasin Jahan, Shami’s wife, has charged him with domestic violence and extra-marital affairs. In a series of claims made by her last week, Jahan claimed Shami has fixed matches. She also filed a written complaint against Shami.

He had been charged under various non-bailable and bailable sections of the IPC, including Section 498A, which deals with cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives, Section 307 – attempt to murder, Section 323 – punishment for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 376 – rape, Section 506 – criminal intimidation, Section 328 and Section 34.

Previously, Shami has dismissed all the allegations and said it is a conspiracy against him.

The decision was not unanimous:

Previously, CoA and certain state association members were not in favour of withholding Shami’s central contract. As per TOI, a cricketer-turned administrator vehemently argued against the decision of the captain and coaches conclave. A senior BCCI employee supported this decision.

Less than 30 cricketers from a pool of hundreds earn an India contract. In such a small group, if there’s a cricketer who is being accused by his wife of adultery and there are other serious allegations, what message is the BCCI sending to society in general,” sources in the know of developments said. “If not for the fixing allegations made by his wife, the opposition would’ve continued. The board was almost on the verge of a huge blunder.”

Now, with the cricketer out of contract, more questions are surrounding Shami’s future.

We’re talking about a very important India cricketer, so whatever is done in this regard, BCCI needs to ensure that he’s not lost to mere allegations or biases of investigations reveal he was set up,” the source added.
