Afghanistan cricket team will play its first ever Test match against India, BCCI Secretary Amitabh Choudhary confirmed.

They were to play Australia in their first ever Test, but BCCI proposed a fixture in front of the board, which has received a green signal,

“Afghans were scheduled to play their first Test in 2019 versus Australia but considering the historic relationship between India and Afghanistan, we decided to host their first Test,” said BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary.

India to Play Afghanistan in their Inaugural Test Match

It is to be noted that the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex is the current home ground of Afghanistan, a base to which they relocated in the year 2015.

Though the BCCI had banned the stadium in September. Afghanistan had not played in India since March, and there might be a case when they might be given any other stadium as their home ground.

Afghanistan, along with Ireland, was inducted, as ICC’s permanent member and was given Test status by ICC in June in the ICC meeting.

Ireland had already scheduled a Test match against Pakistan, which will be played next year from May 11 to 15 in Ireland.

India to Play Afghanistan in their Inaugural Test Match

Afghanistan was looking to play Australia, but now, they will be playing India. BCCI though is yet to announce the date of the Test match.

Recently, Afghanistan team played a three-match ODI series against Ireland in Sharjah. They lost the series by a margin of 2-1 to the William Porterfield-led side.

Before that, they had won the ICC Intercontinental Cup when they defeated UAE in the final game played in Abu Dhabi. Rashid Khan won the Man of the Match award, as apart from taking an eight-for in the game, he also played an innings of 40.
