With just one-and-a-half-month remaining before the start of the lucrative Twenty20 India Premier League (IPL), its franchise Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) management is still looking for a captain. The names of Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik have cropped up but nothing has been decided yet and Chris Lynn seems leading the possible leadership charts.

Amidst this, Jacques Kallis, the Head Coach of KKR, didn’t rule out the name of Chris Lynn too. He may be one of the candidates for the job and is in the race to lead the team.

The news got in Lynn’s ears during the ongoing Twenty20 Internationa Trans-Tasman tri-nation series. The aggressive batsman in Lynn has said that he would love to pounce on the massive opportunity.

“I’d love to, I’d jump at the opportunity. We’ve got a really good group at Kolkata. The coaching staff, Simon Katich, Jacques Kallis, Heath Streak … I can relate (easily too) them. But there’s a couple of boys that have been in the IPL for 10 years so you can’t ignore their experience, especially in their own backyard. I’m still learning the game over there but if given the nod then I’d jump at the chance,” he said.

Keeping Lynn’s T20 experience in mind, he is surely one of the strongest contenders for the job. However, at the same time, his fitness is something which is a big concern.

Lynn sat out for almost a month during last IPL due to a shoulder injury. KKR camp though waited for him to get fit, instead of releasing him and naming a replacement.

This is enough to show that KKR has some big plans for him.

The franchise though used Right to Match (RTM) card on Uthappa but did not retain him on the retention day.

If Lynn is given the charge to lead, it will surely come as a surprise, given that Uthappa and Karthik have more experience of playing in IPL.

However, looking at the results of previous editions of all franchises, foreign captains have also done wonders.

Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist and David Warner have led their IPL teams to victory and incidentally, all the three players are Australian.

Given that Chris Lynn also represents Australia, KKR might punt on this factor. The franchise is yet to divulge any information regarding the captaincy post.

It is clear that either of Uthappa, Karthik and Lynn will be given the job Uthappa and Lynn seem to be the front-runner, but Karthik’s experience can also not be ruled out.
