The news has come as a surprise as Ponting had himself confirmed the news of being in talks with Cricket Australia (CA) regarding coaching Australia T20I team and also not taking up any role in IPL but with this announcement, it can be confirmed that Ponting’s talks with CA might take a back seat.

Ponting replaces Rahul Dravid in the job, who has been appointed as the Head Coach of India A and India U19 team. As per the new rules of BCCI, a coach related to the board is not allowed to be associated with any IPL team.

The first challenge for Ponting will be to lift the Delhi team as this side has emerged out as one of the weakest teams in IPL. The team started it was IPL journey in 2008 but its yet to play an IPL final.

Ponting has a good record in IPL as a coach as in 2013, when he decided not play the tournament midway,  the team went on to win its maiden title. Ponting joined the backroom staff after that. In 2015 too, the team won the title with Ponting in the backroom staff.

However, before 2017 IPL, he was replaced by Mahela Jayawardene, who led the team to a title victory in the first season. Jayawardene, undoubtedly, is expected to continue his association with the franchise.

Meanwhile, Delhi Daredevils confirmed that they had retained Chris Morris, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer. The team has purse of Rs 47 Crore going into the auction.
