New Zealand opener Martin Guptill registered his second T20I century against Australia in the fifth match of the Trans-Tasman Tri-series. Guptill’s century guided New Zealand to a mammoth total of the 243 for six. Skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first.

Coming into the match New Zealand had lost their previous three T20 international fixtures. Australia, on the other hand, had already qualified for the final of the Tri-Series after thrashing Kiwis and visitors England.

The Kiwis started brilliantly as their openers Colin Munro and Guptill were involved in a 132-run opening wicket stand. Munro hit six sixes and six boundaries respectively, as he scored 76 off just 33 deliveries.

However, the star of the show was Martin Guptill who scored his second T20I century. His innings included nine sixes and six boundaries.

On course to his hundred, Guptill overtook former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as the all-time highest run scorer in T20I’s for Kiwis. McCullum scored 2,140 runs in the shortest format of the game.

The former swashbuckling opener congratulated Martin Guptill for this achievement on Twitter.

McCullum wrote, Brilliant and well deserved from @Martyguptill !! Top of the T20 runs leaderboard and a whole lot more to add over the coming years! Keep swinging @BLACKCAPS !!
