Former England captain Michael Vaughan appeared perplexed as to how a player like Martin Guptill went unsold in this year’s IPL auction.

Guptill powered New Zealand to victory with the help of his knock of 65 at Wellington today against England.

The Auckland batsman scored his runs at a strike rate of almost 163, smashing six boundaries and three maximums. Furthermore, he stitched a valuable partnership with his captain Kane Williamson. The two added 82 runs for the second wicket.

Williamson announced his return to form with his knock of 72 off 46 balls which consisted of four boundaries and maximums. New Zealand posted a matchwinning target of 197 in front of England. In the end, the Kiwis won the match by 12 to stay alive in the Tri-series.

Miles away from the action, Vaughan, after witnessing the innings from Guptill, couldn’t comprehend why he went unsold this IPL. Martin has been a part of the IPL in the editions of 2016 and 207 for the Kings XI Punjab franchise.

Earlier, he was also a part of the Mumbai Indians camp but did not get an opportunity for an outing. In the ten IPL innings so far, Guptill has only been able to score 189 runs. His best knock came against Delhi Daredevils last year where he scored an unbeaten 50, with a target of 68.

“Baffles me how Martin Guptill doesn’t get an IPL contract …. Brilliant Batsman & unbelievable fielder …. !!!!!!!!!,” tweeted Vaughan.

Here’s the post

Kiwis forever have been known for their susceptibility to spin, and Martin Guptill is no exception. With the track record, he has against spin in India; franchises may have been conservative when the name of the Kiwi came up during auctions.

Having said that, Guptill displayed rich run in form with scores of 65, 59 and 100 in his last six innings. The think tanks of the all the eight franchises may have missed a trick letting a player like Guptill go.
