While the debate is still on over who is the best Test batsman in the world at the moment, former England skipper Michael Vaughan seems to have concluded. The cricketer-turned-commentator, on Saturday (December 30), called Steve Smith the best Test batsman in the world after Australia scored another stunning century to help his team salvage a draw in the recently-concluded fourth Ashes Test.

Smith had walked into bat when Australia were reduced to 65 for two on a penultimate day after conceding a 164-run lead but remained not out, batting throughout the fifth day to deny England once again. England had a hope of victory when David Warner and Shaun Marsh fell in the space of six runs to leave Australia 178-4, only 14 ahead on the last day before Smith and Mitchell Marsh quashed their hopes with an unbeaten stand of 85 runs.

It was a laborious century from the Australia skipper as he scored 102 off 275 balls with the help of six fours. Impressed with yet another stunning knock from the Aussie, Vaughan took to Twitter to call him the best in the world at the moment.

“The Aussie Captain @stevesmith49 has now Batted for over 30 Hrs and over 200 overs himself this series …. Answers on a postcard to how the F you get him OUT please … #Ashes … The Best Test Batsman in the World ..”

Meanwhile, the latest century is Smith’s 23rd in 60 Tests, a remarkable feat for a player who began his career as a leg-spinning all-rounder and scored his first century just four years ago in his 25th Test.

Smith, who has been sitting at the top of the ICC Test rankings for batsmen for the last two years, has been batting phenomenally in the ongoing Ashes. He had already scored two centuries in the first three Tests including a career-best 239 in the Perth Test.

His current batting average of 63.55 is second only to the legendary Don Bradman regarding batsmen with at least 20 Test innings. In the latest Test rankings that was released last week, Smith took his tally to 945 points, which is the joint-second best rating in the history of the game. The Australia star is now level with England legend Len Hutton and trails Bradman’s all-time leading tally by just 16 points.
