New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson, seemed to be unhappy by the fact that he has been rested for the second and the third ODI of the series against Windies, but, on the other hand, he also accepted the fact that this provides opportunities to other players,

”You always want to play; guys are always disappointed. It’s very hard to watch when you miss a game for anything. But it’s a New Zealand Cricket initiative and something we’ve done for a long time now. It allows guys opportunities, creates more depth and we’ve seen in a number of instances where it’s been quite important at key moments,” he said on the eve of the first ODI.

Williamson, along with pacer Tim Southee, has been rested for the last two ODIs of the series against Windies. While announcing the squad, the selector made it clear that the Williamson and Southee will play just the opening ODI.

For the last two games, Neil Broom and Mitchell Santner will replace these two players respectively. Tom Latham, one of the senior players in the side, will take over the charge of captaincy in last two games.

Santner could have played all the three games, but the selectors decided to rest the left arm spinner keeping in mind his shoulder issue.

In the three-match ODI series, the home side will look to continue their dominance over the visitors. In the Test series, Kiwis whitewashed Windies by a margin of 2-0. In the practice game, which was played ahead of the ODIs, a second string side defeated Windies by six wickets.

The Jason Holder led team is yet to taste a win on this tour, and all their expectations are on the senior players.

Though, they have suffered few more jitters ahead of the start of the limited-overs series. Marlon Samuels, Alzarri Joseph and Sunil Narine will miss the limited-overs series due to various reasons. The selectors had already named their replacements.

The first ODI of the series will be played on December 20 in Whangarei. The last two ODIs will be played in Christchurch. A three-match T20Is series will follow, where the visitors are expected to show some grit against New Zealand.
