The former South African batsman, Herschelle Gibbs, and India’s ace Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, engaged in a war of words recently on the micro-blogging website Twitter.
Chennai-based Ashwin promoted the recent model of Nike footwear. It has the latest foam technology which helps in running activities accompanied by superior comfort.
Ashwin went on to state,”Hey Guys! Just got my hands on the new NIKE React. It’s got a stunning design and the foam technology used makes it light and comfortable to use. Undoubtedly, the best running shoes I’ve stepped into, can’t wait to flaunt them.“
He then attached a video exhibiting the qualities of the new Nike React footwear along with the caption above.

To which, South African great, Herschelle Gibbs replied by saying, ” Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now Ashwin ?,” on a humourous note.

Unfortunately, the Indian off-spinner, visibly, took Gibbs’ intended humour mistakenly and touched on a sensitive issue. Ashwin, in his reply, directed towards Gibbs’ alleged involvement in match-fixing back in 1999-2000.
“Surely not as fast as you did mate, unfortunately, I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate,” replied Ravichandran Ashwin to Gibbs’ joke.
Gibbs’ without getting offended, replied to the shocking reply from Ashwin by saying, “Can’t take a joke, I see, Anyways moving on swiftly.“
Later on, it was found out that Ashwin deleted his reply which contained fixing jibes at Gibbs.
In an attempt to cover up his accusations on Gibbs after a minor backlash from Twitterati, Ashwin retweeted Gibbs reply by captioning,”I totally believed my reply was a joke too, but look how people and yourself perceived it. I am totally game for this sort of fun mate, we shall dine over this sometime,“

Ravichandran Ashwin, then, covered up his statement further with a series of messages which undermines his sensitivity and glorifies his affinity towards banter, while justifying his move to delete his resentful tweet.
“What’s sensitive to me isn’t to someone else, and what’s sensitive to you isn’t to me. I want to respect my family of fans and hence pulled the tweet down, and now entertainment over for all my haters. See you later,” posted Ravichandran Ashwin later.
How it all ended

To conclude, Ashwin’s move to rebut Gibbs’ banter, clearly gives an idea of how our country is gradually becoming intolerant towards humour.
