Over the last year or so India has been playing non-stop cricket across all three formats of the same. The workload on some of the players, in particular, is immense. The limited overs unit looked quite a settled one and comprised of some real match winners.

Especially in the last couple of years, the Men in Blue has reached a whole new level especially when it comes to fast bowling. The emergence of bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has ended all the death bowling woes. These two bowlers, in particular, has been the wrecker-in-chief for the Men in Blue as far as limited overs cricket are concerned.

However, all these players have been playing non-stop cricket and deserves a rest especially before important tours in England and Australia later in the year. Starting from the openers slot of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, the majority of the limited overs team has been playing continuous cricket for a year or so.

Keeping the packed Indian schedule in mind, the team management should look to give a rest to the senior players for their upcoming tri-nation series in Sri Lanka. The Nidahas Trophy will mark the 70th year of Sri Lanka’s independence. The tournament will be played in a T20I format and will also involve Bangladesh. All the matches in the tournament will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Given India’s sensational run in the recent past, oppositions like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka isn’t going to pose them a stiff challenge. Hence India might well be tempted to give rest to most of their senior players.

In the overall context of India’s rise to the top, this particular series won’t matter much. The team management needs to manage the workload of the players pretty carefully and should give rest to them in the upcoming series.

Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma both deserve a much-needed break. Guys like KL Rahul is there in the wings to fill up the spot. Captain Virat Kohli might be part of the series as he wasn’t part of the limited overs squad for the series against Sri Lanka. The Indian skipper got married to Anushka Sharma during that gap and had to miss the series.

Since his marriage, he has looked in phenomenal touch and will look to continue his good work in the Nidahas Trophy. Hardik Pandya who has been part of the team in all three formats of the game also deserves a rest. He hasn’t been in the best of forms in the South African tour and needed to ease things out.

India in all likelihood might be prompted to give a break to some of their reserved players. They have a huge pool of players at the moment and can win matches on their own. The Nidahas Trophy might well prove to be a huge opportunity to the youngsters.
