Tamil Nadu has appointed all-rounder Vijay Shankar as the captain of the 15-man squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, scheduled to take place at Vishakhapatnam and Vizianagaram from January 8 to 14.

Shankar recently received his maiden India call-up when he got included in the team for the Test series against Sri Lanka. However, he did not get the chance to make his debut. The 26-year old, who is one of the only six cricketers who had scored over 1500 runs and taken more than 25 wickets since 2012-13, was in fine form in this year’s Ranji Trophy too.

In three Ranji matches this season, he managed one century and took six wickets including a four-for that gave Tamil Nadu the first-innings lead against Mumbai.

Last season, Vijay had guided Tamil Nadu to titles in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Deodhar Trophy. In the past edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, he had scored 78 runs and bagged four wickets.

Meanwhile, India players Dinesh Karthik and Washington Sundar have also been included in the side. Both the players were in India squad for the recently-concluded limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.
