With the reports of senior players in line to be rested for the Nidahas Trophy, a few names have cropped up for the captaincy job in their absence.

Many of the players who are a part of the side are in contention to lead the side.

Here are the three players who might be appointed as the captain for the Nidahas Trophy 2018 –

Shikhar Dhawan – The Indian opener holds a bright chance to lead the team in the T20I tournament, should Virat and Rohit be rested.

Dhawan has oodles of experience under his belt and is one of the strongest contenders for the job.

He is one of the best batsmen in this format and is a regular member of the side.

He has led Delhi in domestic cricket in the past and that experience can come handy if he is given a chance in the upcoming series.

If Dhawan is given the opportunity, then it will be the first when he would lead the team at international level.

Also, this will also add to Dhawan’s credentials in future.

KL Rahul – Though he is finding it difficult to make it to the playing XI, it’s a fact that he is more deserving to be in the playing XI, than most of the other players.

Rahul can be one of the best options to lead the side on tour, if a second string side is sent to Sri Lanka.

He is one of the players who has been there in the side for more than three years now.

He could have been one of the candidates for the full-time post as T20I captain when MS Dhoni relinquished the post, but with Indian team not having a concept of different captains for different formats, Kohli was appointed s full-time captain.

With Indian team set to play a long season after IPL, there would be times when both Kohli and Rohit might be rested at the same time, and then, KL Rahul can always lead the side.

Having one eye on the future, he seems to be a good choice for the post of captain.

However, he will face strong competition from Shikhar Dhawan – who is more experienced than him.

Suresh Raina – There is no doubt that Raina will be part of the T20I side for the tri-series, regardless the number of runs he scores in the third T20I against South Africa.

If India wants to play safely in the tri-series, given the fact that they also want to rest seniors, Raina is the perfect option available.

He also has experience of leading Indian team in the past and it can always come into play.

Also, now, he also has experience of leading an IPL team in two editions which will add to his weight.

He is, in fact, the strongest contender to do the job if Rohit and Kohli are rested for the series.
