Virender Sehwag To Don Batting Gloves Once Again In Cricket's Latest Format

In yet another attempt to make cricket more entertaining and appealing to the mass, a new tournament, which is calling itself as ‘cricket’s new revolution’ will witness matches lasting 90 minutes like football with each team being allowed to play only 10 overs. The meteoric rise of T20 cricket has already hurt the popularity of Test cricket and a 10-over per side format is undoubtedly the last thing every traditional cricket fan will want at this moment.

The four day tournament will take place in Sharjah between December 21-24. The tournament called T10 Cricket League will see six teams battling it out and is backed by the Emirates Cricket Board and T10 Sports Management. It will be officially launched on next Monday.

Meanwhile, the upcoming competition will give the fans an opportunity to see the stars of yesteryear in action once again with the likes of  Virender Sehwag and Shahid Afridi set to ply their trades. It will be a six-team tournament and each team will have one icon player. Four of the six icon players belong to Asia- Bangladesh star  Shakib Al Hasan and three former players- Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, India’s Virender Sehwag and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara. The only non-Asian icons are England captain Eoin Morgan and West Indies star, Chris Gayle.

Talking about some other innovations of the tournament, it will have breaks after five overs during which flash mobs will entertain the crowd. Not only that, the organisers have even planned to make the dot balls attractive to the spectators as there will also be people dressed as statues who will stalk the boundary and remain still after every dot ball.

The organisers of the tournament are looking to revolutionise the game, and they want to achieve it by decreasing the span of the game and implementing several entertaining innovations. Justifying the new format, the organisers through their website stated:“We believe that cricket, with its billions of followers, is ready to move to this quick and fun-filled version. The world’s best sporting events – like soccer, volleyball, basketball – are all 90 minutes of action.”

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
