While the Decision Review System has improved the quality of umpiring decision, one cannot deny the fact that it has always been a matter of debate in the cricketing fraternity.

The system has not quite managed to impress one and all in the cricketing world and the reason behind the same was recently witnessed in the ongoing second One-Day International between India and South Africa in Centurion.

India opener Rohit Sharma was initially given out by the on-field umpire but the decision got overturned later when the batsman reviewed the decision, much to the disappointment of South Africa camp.

The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the second over when Kagiso Rabada seemed to have made Rohit edge the delivery behind the stumps. The right-arm pacer had bowled one just outside the off and got it to slant away off the pitch, drawing Rohit into prod. And just when the ball passed the bat, a sound came off, convincing the Proteas camp that the batsman had nicked it.

They went up in appeal straightway and got the decision in their favour. However, Rohit Sharma was convinced he had not edged the ball and reviewed the decision immediately. Replays showed inconclusive evidence, as the front view showed that the ball had passed the bat without any contact while the lateral view showed spikes in the UltraEdge just when the ball was getting past the bat.

The TV umpire eventually and perhaps rightly decided that the bat had hit the pad when the ball was passing, as he gave the decision in the batsman’s favour.

Here is a clip of that incident:
