There is no doubt about the fact that England will look to forget the first day’s play against New Zealand in the opening Test at the Eden Park in Auckland. The visitors were unable to cope with the pace and swing of the pace of Trent Boult and Tim Southee and were bowled out for a mere 58 runs in their 1st innings.

It was a once in a lifetime spell by Trent Boult. He kept bowling in the same areas, and the pitch did the rest for him. Southee supported him brilliantly and bagged four wickets in the process, two less than Boult. The Kiwis began with the wicket of Alastair Cook when the southpaw knocked a three quarter area delivery straight to 3rd slip fielder Tom Latham.

Skipper Joe Root was castled by a peach of a delivery from Boult. He didn’t have any idea as the ball came back sharply and disturbed the timbers. The next wicket to fall was Dawid Malan who yet again nicked a short of length delivery straight to keeper BJ Watling. Two more wickets fell without any addition of the total.

Tim Southee got his first breakthrough when he induced an edge from the blade of Mark Stoneman on 15. Boult castled ben Stokes with a delivery that came back sharply. Stokes was in two minds whether to leave or play and in the end, he was in no man’s land and couldn’t quite bring the bat down in time to ensure the ball didn’t disturb the timbers.

The next to go was Jonny Bairstow, and the bowler in action was Tim Southee. It was a full-length delivery, and Bairstow went for a full-fledged drive. However, he mistimed it and hit it straight back to Southee who accepted the catch gleefully.

Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali also receded to the pavilion in quick succession as Boult and Southee send their stumps for a cartwheel. Williamson took a one-handed stunner to send back Stuart Broad to the pavilion. Eventually, it was a 31 runs partnership between Craig Overton and James Anderson which helped England get past the 50 mark.
