5 Overhyped Indian Cricketers. There has always been a set of cricketers who get plenty of chances in the team despite their inconsistent performances and their potential might be a good reason for it. However, they cannot travel with the national team for a long time without performing and they should be set a limit for the opportunities.

Performances and potential might be different at times and they should be assessed in the right way. There have been a lot of players who have fired at the second stage of their careers however, some players do get the overrated tag.

The likes of Ambati Rayudu, Mayank Agarwal, Vijay Shankar, Kedar Jadhav, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, Manish Pandey, Ishant Sharma, Krunal Pandya have either wasted talent or were praised too much but couldn’t live up to expectations.

The likes of Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson, Jaydev Unadkat, and Prithvi Shaw are some of the overhyped players who have been praised but haven’t been picked in the Indian team much despite consistent performances in the domestic circuit.

5 Overhyped Indian Cricketers

1. Shivam Dube

Facing Bangladesh on 3 November 2019, Shivam Dube earned his T20I debut for India. The series landed him a comparison with Yuvraj Singh but as of now, it turned out to be an utter flop comparison made by the cricket pundits.

Shivam Dube has featured in only 1 ODI and 13 T20Is averaging less than 20 in both formats and has picked only 5 scalps in T20Is averaging over 40 with the ball. He played only 1 ODI against West Indies on December 2019, while his last T20I came against New Zealand in February 2020.

2. Manish Pandey

With a fighting century, Manish Pandey helped India win a one-day international in Australia in 2016 and also scored a century at Centurion during the 2009 IPL. ever since then, Manish Pandey has been hot and cold, due to his inconsistency, he has been in and out of the national squad.

Manish Pandey has played 29 ODIs and 39 T20Is amassing 566 ODI and 709 T20I runs averaging 33.29 and 44.31 respectively in the limited overs formats. Despite debuting against Zimbabwe way back in 2015, he hasn’t gotten chances regularly and is an overhyped player. His last ODI came against Sri Lanka in 2021 and his last T20I came against Australia in 2020.

3. Ishant Sharma

Almost 6 years ago, Ishant Sharma burst onto the international scene by scaring the daylight out of Australian batsmen such as Ricky Ponting in Australia. Steve Waugh called him the future of Indian cricket after that controversial tour.

A lot was expected from the lanky, long-haired 6’4″ pacer from Delhi and that was proved as he was picked for almost a million dollars by SRK’s Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2008. He capped off his first year of international cricket with a man of the series award for spearheading India’s Test series win against Australia at home.

But soon after that, his natural ability to bowl swing at 150 km/hr disappeared, making him way too predictable, especially in Indian conditions which tend to favor spinners more. He is another sober story of a potential Indian fast bowler losing his way. This is where the likes of Zaheer Khan, Kapil Dev, and Javagal Srinath deserve immense respect.

Injuries came one after another, and that shattered his confidence further. That has made him only play 105 Tests and 80 ODIs for India so far along with 14 T20Is. 311 wickets in Tests at an average of 32.4 simply does not do justice to the team.

He has picked only 115 scalps in 80 ODIs averaging 30.98 and 8 scalps in 14 T20Is averaging 50 doesn’t do justice to his talent. While his last T20I was in 2013, his last ODI was in 2016, he is considered for Tests nowadays, but the last one came in November 2021. His last IPL season came in 2021 and he has picked only 72 scalps in 93 IPL games averaging 37.57.

Sanju Samson

Rishabh Pant’s quiet bat in white ball cricket is making quite a bit of noise on social media, especially because of the absence of Sanju Samson in the playing XI. Sanju Samson has played only 11 ODIs where he amassed 330 runs averaging 66.

He has hit 2 fifties with a top score of 86* against Proteas in ODIs. He has a strike rate of 104.76. He has played only 16 T20Is despite debuting in the shortest format way back in 2015 against Zimbabwe. He had scored 296 runs averaging 21.14 at a strike rate of 135.16.

Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw is an overhyped opening batter. He is much talked about for non-selection in the Indian squad recently despite consistently scoring runs at the domestic level. He has played only 5 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20I and has amassed 339 runs averaging 42.37 in Tests and 189 runs averaging 31.5 in ODIs.

Prithvi Shaw last played for India in July on Sri Lanka 2021 tour and was out for a first-ball duck on his T20I debut (the only T20I he played). He has played 6 ODIs, scoring 189 runs and 5 Tests with 339 runs with one century to his name. In 49 List A games, Prithvi Shaw has an average of 53.76 and a strike rate of 123.95. With 315 runs, including two hundred and a fifty, he finished third in the Duleep Trophy.

The opening batter’s strike rate of 92.92, was the highest in the competition among players who scored more than 21 runs. During the Duleep Trophy, Prithvi Shaw hit a hundred against North-East Zone for West Zone, demonstrating his strong form.

He was the 2nd highest run-getter with 332 runs averaging 36.88 in 10 games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23 at a strike rate of 181.42. Repeatedly overlooked for the Indian team, Prithvi Shaw made a statement with a blistering 61-ball 134 and powered Mumbai to a 61-run victory over Assam at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
