The 5th match of the Asia Cup 2022 saw the battle between Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team and Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team on Thursday, September 1, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
This match became a highly-anticipated contest ahead of its commencement not only because it was a do-or-die match, but because of the off-field verbal battle between the teams.
Sri Lanka National Cricket Team emerged victorious in the nail-biting match by 2 wickets to become the third team after Afghanistan and India to progress to the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2022, which is the 15th edition of the multi-nation tournament.

Earlier, Sri Lanka National Cricket Team won the toss and elected to field first in the knockout match. The Lankan Lions made just one change to the playing XI as Asitha Fernando came in for Matheesha Pathirana.
The Bangla Tigers, on the other hand, made three changes to the playing XI as Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan and Ebadot Hossain replaced Anamul Haque, Mohammed Naim and Mohammad Saifuddin.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Sabbir Rahman opened the innings for Bangladesh National Cricket Team. This was the 12th different opening combination for Bangladesh in 21 T20Is since the start of the T20 World Cup last year.
Meanwhile, debutant Asitha Fernando got the first breakthrough for Sri Lanka by dismissing Sabbir Rahman for 5 in his first over.
At the end of the powerplay, Bangladesh were at 55/1. Mehidy Hasan Miraz played risky cricket in the powerplay and got rewarded for it. However, he was castled by Wanindu Hasaranga on the 5th ball of the 7th over. He scored 38 runs off 26 balls, including 2 fours and 2 sixes.
Mushfiqur Rahim (4) and Shakib Al Hasan (24) got out in the 8th and 11th over. After that, Mahmudullah (27) and Afif Hossain (39) had an amazing 57 runs partnership. In the end, Mosaddek Hossain (24) and Taskin Ahmed (11) batted with a healthy strike rate to help Bangladesh reach 183/7.
Chasing the target, openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka provided Sri Lanka with a good start. However, Pathum Nissanka (20) and Charith Asalanka (1) were dismissed by Ebadot Hossain in the 6th over and at the end of the powerplay, they were at 48/2.
Soon Sri Lanka lost the wickets of Danushka Gunathilaka (11) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (2) in the 8th and 9th over respectively. Opener Kusal Mendis played an absolutely fantastic knock of 60 runs before being dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman in the 15th over.
In the end, skipper Dasun Shanaka played a captain’s knock and scored 45 runs. Chamika Karunaratne also scored good 16 runs, but he got run out in the 19th over. Sri Lanka needed 8 runs off the final over to win the match and Asitha Fernando’s crucial 10 runs contribution helped Sri Lanka go past the finish line.

What a performance by @OfficialSLC! This win will boost the future of Asian cricket. Really glad that a young team batted so sensibly, but didn’t let us watch the famous Naagin dance. 😅 #SLvsBAN pic.twitter.com/39hyuwsdfH

The whole Sri Lanka-Bangladesh thing was on another level.
Shanaka saying that, then Sujon, then Mahela, then Nurul, full-on verbal war.
And then, this match, full of drama.

2 no-balls in the last 2 overs from Bangladesh?? A suicidal run-out to sacrifice the last remaining batter from Sri Lanka? A close match where both teams allowed the situation to get to them! #SLvsBD #Asiacup2022

Feel bad for Hasaranga. Incredible bowler, but used to bat so well until he made it big as a bowler, now gets out to such stupid shots. Very similar to what happened to Afridi when he became a full time bowler. Young lad, SLC need to handle him better.#BANVSSL #asiacup
