Former India captain Kapil Dev has dismissed those who wanted to see Sanju Samson replace Suryakumar Yadav in the ODI playing XI.Dev has dismissed those who wanted to see Sanju Samson replace Suryakumar Yadav in the ODI playing XI.

To put it mildly, Suryakumar Yadav’s performance in T20I and ODI matches is the polar opposite. Since making his T20I debut in 2021, he has not yet made a mistake. He barely averages 24 in ODIs, and in 21 innings, he has scored more than 50 runs twice. Samson, on the other hand, averages 66 across his 11 ODIs.

Since then, a few people have questioned Suryakumar Yadav’s inclusion in the ODI team. While he has performed exceptionally well in the shorter format, he has not even come close to translating that kind of form into the 50-over game.

The illustrious Indian batsman Kapil Dev advised against comparing Samson with Surya. The 1983 World Cup champion captain of India asserted that by supporting a player of SKY’s caliber, the team management is acting morally.

“A cricketer who has played so well will always get more chances. Don’t compare Surya with Sanju Samson, it doesn’t seem right. If Sanju goes through a bad phase then you will talk about somebody else. This should not happen. If the team management has decided to back Suryakumar Yadav then he should be given more chances. Yes, people will talk, and give their opinion but ultimately it’s the management’s call,” Kapil Dev told ABP News.

KL Rahul has moved up the order to No. 4 for the third ODI run chase in Chennai, while Suryakumar Yadav was brought in at No. 7. Even the all-rounder Axar Patel was deployed in front of him, ostensibly to neutralize the danger posed by the leg spinner and the left-arm spin. His initial stint at No. 7 was unmemorable because Ashton Agar bowled him, which made India’s issues increase as the run chase went on.

As per Kapil Dev, batting order changes are nothing unusual in ODIs, and Rohit Sharma, the captain, and Rahul Dravid, the coach, must have had a rationale for employing SKY at No. 7.

“It’s very easy to talk after the match is finished. Maybe the idea behind sending Suryakumar at No.7 was to give him an opportunity as a finisher. This (shuffling of the batting order) is nothing new in ODIs. This has happened many times before. Yes, at times it can happen that a batter’s confidence is dented if he has been dragged down the order. But the onus rests on the player to tell his captain that ‘I can handle myself in the top order.’ The coach and captain must have taken the decision with particular thinking,” Kapil Dev added.

While the captain and coach have frequently supported Suryakumar Yadav despite his dismal performance, the batsman will need to contribute runs to ensure his spot in the 2023 ODI World Cup squad.
