Venkatesh Prasad has come under fire from Aakash Chopra for passionately contesting KL Rahul’s position in India’s Test team. He emphasized the former Indian seamer’s use of practical stats and contrasted him with players who are currently not considered part of the Indian team.

Over the course of his three innings in the present Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rahul scored a total of 38 runs. In his social media account, Prasad blasted the Indian team management for sticking with the Karnataka opener by drawing comparisons between his performance and those of some of the other Indian players.

In a video posted to his YouTube account, Chopra explained how Prasad simply withheld Shubman Gill’s home Test statistics when contrasting him with Rahul.

“He (Prasad) did not even mention Shubman’s house numbers. Because you’re looking at averages, he’s pitched 11 innings at home and has a 26.3. I’m arguing you shouldn’t use averages to criticize Shubman Gill. He’s a fantastic player. He is a great player, but he uses the same yardstick for everyone else” Aakash Chopra said.

Aakash Chopra stated that Gill’s foreign numbers look higher because of his century against Bangladesh last year, stating: “He has shown 14 overseas innings in which he has an average of 37, in which he has conveniently not spoken about SENA countries. If we see only SENA, his numbers will also not be that good. His away numbers are looking good because of Bangladesh.”

“Shikhar Dhawan scored a century in New Zealand”: Aakash Chopra

When discussing the seasoned opener’s international statistics, Aakash Chopra drew attention to the fact that Prasad had overlooked Shikhar Dhawan’s performance in the SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).

Aakash Chopra explained: “He has spoken about Shikhar Dhawan’s best overseas average – that he has an average of 39. He conveniently missed the SENA countries. If we talk about SENA countries, Shikhar Dhawan’s average is 26. He scored a century in New Zealand but other than that, he doesn’t have a century in any SENA country.”

The prominent commentator went on to say that Dhawan’s name should not have been mentioned in the debate. He said that the Delhi opener isn’t even playing first-class cricket and isn’t even being considered for Test cricket.
