As the Indian Test team’s captain in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma hasn’t really made a mistake. Comparisons between Rohit and Virat Kohli’s captaincy are frequently made now that India has successfully defended the BGT for a fourth straight year.

Gautam Gambhir, a former cricketer for India, believes Rohit is following Kohli’s lead after India’s six-wicket victory in the test match in Delhi.

In response to a question on Rohit’s captaincy during a talk on Star Sports, Gambhir stated: “Honestly, I have always believed that Rohit Sharma is an amazing captain, but there is not much difference between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, especially in this format. Virat Kohli started this template.”

The former Indian opener elaborated on the point that Rohit is merely imitating Kohli’s strategies: “Virat Kohli has captained this Test team incredibly effectively anytime he has captained it, and Rohit is most likely following in his footsteps. Rohit, to be honest, has not made his own template. It’s almost the same captaincy as how Virat Kohli handled Ashwin and Jadeja.”

Gautam Gambhir noted that Rohit, like Kohli, uses Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja differently depending on the situation. He explained that the Indian captain is defensive at times by setting in-and-out fields and offensive at other times.

“Rohit’s challenge will be overseas”: Gautam Gambhir

The former cricketer-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir concluded by adding that he couldn’t decide which of the two Indian batting legends would make a better Test captain.

“Virat Kohli was as successful. So I don’t see too much difference and I don’t even want to say who is a better captain in these conditions because Virat was an equally good captain as Rohit is now. Rohit’s challenge will be overseas,” Gautam Gambhir said.

Rohit, who has yet to captain a team outside of India, has led his country to victories in all four Test matches thus far. In order to guarantee India a berth in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, he will look to extend the winning streak against Australia in the final two tests.
