Shubman Gill became the youngest Indian batter to score centuries in all three formats during the third T20I against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 1. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said Shubman Gill proved his decision by registering the highest individual T20I score by an Indian.

The 23-year-old smashed an unbeaten century of 126 off 63 balls as India posted a mammoth score of 234/4 in 20 overs. India won the match by a record margin of 168 runs and clinched the three T20 series 2-1. The right-handed batsman has been in top form and scored his fifth international century in his last 15 innings across formats.

I Wasn’t 100 Percent Certain About T20s – Aakash Chopra

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra admitted that Shubman Gill is more suited to playing Tests and ODIs but is not sure about the shorter format.

“The first question in your mind might be whether Shubman Gill has become a T20 cricketer now. I will keep my hands on my heart and say the truth – I felt he plays Tests very well, ODI is his favorite format but I wasn’t 100 percent certain about T20s,” Aakash Chopra said.

“I admit it, I say in front of everyone, there is nothing wrong. He has made such a big score now, it is fantastic. I eat my words, they are very, very bitter. It is the truth that it is the highest T20I score by an Indian,” he added.

That’s Also The Second Highest – Aakash Chopra

The Gujarat Titans opener surpassed Virat Kohli’s 122 against Afghanistan and became the highest individual score for India in the shorter format. The cricketer-turned-commentator said that Gill single-handedly outplayed the Kiwis.

“If we talk about the gap between his individual score and the opposition team’s score, that’s also the second highest. The Afghanistan guys were in front of Virat Kohli in the Asia Cup and now it is about here.”
