India’s Wednesday loss to Australia by 21 runs marked the first time since March 2019 that they have lost an ODI series at home. It was Australia who had beaten them last and since then, India hosted eight teams for the ODI series and beat all of them. Yet, the most recent loss occurred just months before India will host the 2023 World Cup.

The three-match series between the two teams entered the third ODI in Chennai knotted at one each. After winning the toss, Australia chose to bat first and scored 269 runs. In reply, India was all out for 248 runs.

“The boundaries had dried up and they weren’t even getting singles” – Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed hope that India will remember this before the World Cup, as the team now splits for the Indian Premier League (IPL), which begins on March 31. Sunil Gavaskar claimed that Australia’s outstanding fielding put enough pressure on the Indian hitters to force them to hit shots.

“It was the pressure created. They were not getting singles. The boundaries had dried up and they weren’t even getting singles. When that happens then you try and play something that you are not used to. That is something they will have to look at. But of course, now the IPL starts. This shouldn’t be forgotten. India sometimes makes the mistake of forgetting this, but this one shouldn’t be because, in the World Cup, we may face Australia again,” said Sunil Gavaskar on Star Sports.

“When you are chasing a score of 270 or nearly 300, you need a partnership of about 90 or 100 and that will take you close. But that didn’t happen. Yes, there were a couple of partnerships, one between Rahul and Kohli, but then you wanted another similar or bigger stand. Fielding from Australia was outstanding. Their bowling was very good. It was tight, stump to stump, but their fielding was very good. That was the difference,” Sunil Gavaskar added.

Australia has settled the score with India after a 2-1 defeat in the Border Gavaskar Series, as the visitors overcame India 2-1 in the three-match ODI series to win the series.
