Australia will play the four-match Border Gavaskar series in India, with the first Test scheduled to be played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday, February 9. Legendary cricketer Ian Chappell said that he has no idea about Australian players’ mindsets towards Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Australia held a four-day camp in Alur, Bengaluru, where they practiced on customized pitches. They recruited Mahesh Pithia, a Baroda spinner whose bowling action is similar to Ashwin’s, as a new strategy to counter the Indian spinner. They held a brief pre-series training session in Sydney before heading to India, using SG balls and spin-friendly wickets ranging from rank-turners to slow-turners.

I’ve Got No Idea How They Are Thinking About Ashwin – Ian Chappell

In an interaction on Star Sports, Ian Chappell advised the Australian batsmen to rotate the strike on Ashwin’s bowling to change his line and lengths.

“If you want to know how the Australian players are thinking about Ashwin, ask the Australian players. I’ve got no idea how they are thinking about Ashwin. You’ve obviously got to think about a good opponent like Ashwin, but you’ve got to think about being proactive.”

“If you are not the one who is basically dictating terms – that doesn’t mean you are hitting him for fours and sixes… Sometimes, just getting regular singles off a bowler will frustrate him more. If you are getting singles on a regular basis, he’s having to change who he bowls to.”
