Legendary cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar slammed the pitch used for the third Test match between India and Australia in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar believes that the trend of three-day matches in India leads to a “mockery of Test cricket”.

There is the debate of the Indian pitches, where the turn is on offer from the ball 1. The pitch used in the Indore Test can be rated “Below Average” by the ICC match referee after the fall of 14 wickets on the opening day of the match. India were bowled out for 109 runs in the first innings, while Australia lost their four wickets for 156 runs.

Important To Get Crowds Back For Test Cricket – Dilip Vengsarkar

Dilip Vengsarkar believes that the pitch must have an even bounce to give both batsmen and bowlers an equal chance and to prevent the pitch from falling too much in favour of the bowlers.

“The pitch makes all the difference if you want to watch good cricket. You must have wickets with even bounce so that both batters and bowlers get equal opportunity. If the ball turns from day one and first session itself and that too with uneven bounce, it makes a mockery of Test cricket,” Vengsarkar told PTI.

“It is important to get crowds back for Test cricket. You see that in England and Australia but unfortunately it is not happening in India. People will come back to Test cricket only if it is interesting. Nobody wants to see bowlers dominating the batters from first session itself,” added Vengsarkar.

India won the first two Test matches in Nagpur and Delhi to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series. The Australian team bounced back in the series despite the absence of their captain Pat Cummins and veteran opener David Warner. Matthew Kuhnemann troubled the Indian batters with his tight bowling and picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in the longer format.
