Mohammed Shami has been one of India’s cornerstones when it comes to the pace bowling department across formats for the past five years. The bowler has been a star performer for the side on needed occasions and has turned the tide of the game with his bowling.
However, in his book Coaching Beyond: My Days with the Indian Cricket Team, former team India fielding coach R Sridhar narrated an incident where former head coach Ravi Shastri seemed frustrated with Mohammed Shami in 2018 when India were touring South Africa.
India during their tour of South Africa had been thrashed by the hosts in the first two games of the three-match series and were looking to redeem themselves in the final Test game, but from the outsider’s perspective South Africa were on their way to chase down the total in the fourth innings much to the disappointment of everyone present in the dressing room.

We All Shared Ravi’s Frustrations: R Sridhar writes on Mohammed Shami’s behavior
While trying to stop the relentless South African batters, the Indian bowlers were looking helpless at one point in the game, with the opposition batters belting them across the park. Sridhar wrote about the scenario from the dressing room when the players returned for the tea break.
“Mohammed Shami looked disinterested as he came back in, and as he did for lunch when he had piled up his plate with rice and mutton curry. During the first interval, Ravi lashed out at Shami after taking a glance at the bowler’s plate. Bloody hell, will you satiate your hunger here itself or will you save some of it for wickets too?”
“We all shared Ravi’s frustrations because this was a series that ought to have played out differently. Just before Shami left the dressing room to return for the post-Tea session, Ravi took him (Mohammed Shami) aside and would him up. Not by telling him he was a match-winner and stuff like that. Post-tea, he was unplayable. He blasted through the middle and lower order to finish with five for 28, and we ended up winning by a comfortable 63-run margin.”

Sridhar in his book has narrated a lot of incidences from his time with the Indian Cricket team touching down on various topics which include the time in 2016 when Virat Kohli was so eager to get the red-ball captaincy that Ravi Shastri had to remind him that Virat needed to respect Dhoni as the captain, and his time would come.
