Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri stated that the veteran off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin would make India’s all-time Test XI, given his match-winning performances on Indian soil. Ravi Shastri believes that all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja can join Ashwin on the list if he continues to perform well with both the bat and ball.
Ravichandran Ashwin took 463 wickets in 91 Test matches in his 12-year international career. The off-spinner is the second highest wicket-taker for India in the longest format of the game. The 36-year-old has won nine Player of the Series awards in red-ball cricket, behind Sri Lankan legend Muralitharan, who had 11 in Tests.

Ashwin can get you runs at crucial stages – Ravi Shastri
Speaking to Sanjana Ganesan in a recent episode of ICC Review, Ravi Shastri praised the Indian spinner and said that Ravichandran Ashwin’s record in Indian conditions makes him the favourite to be included in the all-time XI. Shastri believes that Ashwin has the ability to score runs with the bat at crucial stages of the match.
“I never compare eras, but the record that he (Ashwin) has – especially in Indian conditions – would make him a favourite to get into that (all-time XI) squad. In Indian conditions he’s something else. I mean, you’ve seen some great spinners in the past. He’s right up there. And the fact that he can get you runs at crucial stages makes all the difference,” Shastri said.

Jadeja Can Be Even More Dangerous Than Ashwin – Ravi Shastri
Shastri stated that Ravindra Jadeja’s accuracy is a nightmare for opposing batters and that there are no loose balls on offer. The 60-year-old believes that Jadeja is more dangerous than Ashwin with the uneven bounce on the pitch.
“He (Jadeja) will start to get the credit (he deserves) now. There’s no question about it. The last year, year-and-a-half, he’s been simply outstanding because he’s realised his potential. He gives you nothing and it’s a nightmare (for opposition batters). Especially if you’re not in good form, and you are in the opposition as a batsman, you’ll have nightmares. You’ll have Jadeja in your dreams because the guy gives you nothing.”
“If it’s a track where the ball is up and down, he can be even more dangerous than Ashwin. Ashwin anyway has the guy (with his) skill. But here, this guy (Jadeja) can have you on edge because one ball will skip through, one ball will turn, and he gives you nothing. His accuracy is so good that there are hardly any loose balls on offer.”
Ravindra Jadeja is in form against Australia with ball and bat, taking 17 wickets in two Test matches and 96 runs in two innings. The 34-year-old has won back-to-back Player of the Match awards since his six-month comeback to competitive cricket.
