Indian star opener Shubman Gill has been in top touch with the bat and has proved his capabilities as one of the best-emerging players across the globe. Gill is going through one of the best years in his relatively short career having registered a ton across formats.Â
In the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Shubman Gill managed to score an impressive 128 runs during India’s first innings. However, due to the flat surface and the massive totals posted by both teams in their respective first innings, the game ultimately ended in a dull draw.

Initially, KL Rahul was paired with Rohit Sharma as India’s opening batter in the first two Tests, while Shubman Gill remained excluded from the playing XI.Â
Despite getting a chance to play in the third Test after KL Rahul was dropped, Shubman Gill couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. However, his remarkable century in the final Test may have secured his spot as Rohit’s opening partner for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Sanjay Manjrekar Praises Shubman Gill’s Approach In Test Cricket
During a review of the series on Star Sports, Manjrekar was questioned about his opinion on Shubman Gill’s ability to translate his opportunities into outstanding performances, not just in white-ball cricket but also in the longest format of the game. Manjrekar shared his thoughts on the batter and showered praise on the youngster for his recent performances.

“The things I liked – one thing I will talk about is the footwork. The front foot is now going further forward although the trigger movement is the back foot. This will help him a lot in Test cricket.”
“The second thing we saw in Test cricket as well is the big game, the confidence with which he plays the lofted shots. When you see him, it seems he is a purist, a classical player to an extent, but the power game comes whenever he calls for it,” he said.
“In this match also he played a lofted shot in the nineties to go close to a hundred. He reached his (ODI) double hundred also with a six. This power game saves you in nervous moments as it did with Virender Sehwag. I didn’t know about this but now it has come to the fore that this is another of his rare strengths.”
During his remarkable century in the fourth Test, Shubman Gill hit a total of 12 fours and a six. He executed a lofted four off Nathan Lyon’s delivery to elevate his score from 92 to 96. Later, he swept Todd Murphy for yet another boundary, reaching the century milestone.
