There have been a lot of talks around the Indian batting order heading into the opening clash of the Border Gavaskar Series. The side have done well against Bangladesh, but Australia are likely to be a bigger threat considering the momentum behind the opposition. India are likely to open the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma alongside KL Rahul but things could change in the coming games.
With Shreyas Iyer currently out due to an injury for the first two games, India have an open spot in their middle order, which is likely to be filled by opener Shubman Gill who has been in sensational form as of late. However, batting at number 5 does not fit well for a player such as Gill who can perform a lot better when positioned above.

Shubman Gill should open because KL Rahul can come down at No.5: Saba Karim
Ex-Cricketer Saba Karim while talking to News18 talked about the possible batting combinations India could field for the upcoming games against Australia. Karim firmly believes that KL Rahul is an ideal fit to bat in the middle order while Gill opens the innings alongside Rohit Sharma.
“Shubman Gill should open because KL Rahul can come down at No.5. It will strengthen our batting. He’ll also get time to prepare himself. They need a technically sound batter at No.5, i.e., when the ball gets older. You need the experience to face cutters and spinners.”
“It’s a vital series for KL Rahul, It could prove to be the turning point of his career. KL Rahul is an accomplished player, technically sound, but he manages only one or two good scores. Besides this, there’s a string of low scores. A big player is known for his consistency. KL Rahul should play at least 2-3 match-winning innings for his team, which we haven’t witnessed so far.”

Karim’s suggestion seems like a very likely combination for India’s playing eleven as Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma and done well while batting together in the ODI and T20I games against Sri Lanka and New Zealand and the team management could be poised to try the combination when it comes to red-ball cricket.
