Former wicketkeeper batter Parthiv Patel said that the Australian cricketers exploited the loophole in the DRS system during the third Test against India in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Australian captain Steve Smith made the most of the DRS rule and went for an appeal for a stumping quickly after wicketkeeper Alex Carey removed the bails.
Australia used the stumping appeal rule in their favour, so that they would not lose review for caught behind appeal. The rule states that if the fielding team could convince the square-leg umpire for a stumping appeal, it would immediately be checked for an outside edge. It worked for them when Ravichandran Ashwin was dismissed in the first innings as the third umpire found an edge before the stumping was checked.

Caught Behind Should Not Be Checked – Parthiv Patel
Speaking to Cricbuzz, former India cricketer Parthiv Patel has called for a change in the DRS rule, suggesting that the TV umpire should only check the stumping if the appeal is made only for a stumping. The former Royal Challengers Bangalore player further said that a caught behind should not be checked unless the fielding captain opts for a review.
“Steve Smith is aware of that and he exploited the loophole. The on-field umpire should avoid going to the third umpire if he is sure that it’s not out when there is an appeal for a stumping,” said Parthiv Patel.
“The ideal solution is that the TV umpire should only review the stumping if the appeal is made only for a stumping. A caught behind should not be checked unless the fielding captain opts for a review,” he added.
The visitors bundled out India for 163 runs in their second innings. The Steve Smith-led team needed 76 runs to register their first win in the ongoing four match Test series. Steve Smith was the captain the last time Australia defeated India on their home soil.
