Dinesh Karthik, a seasoned Indian batsman, expressed sympathy for his 35-year-old compatriot Umesh Yadav before saying that he was “always overlooked” in the Indian team.

Umesh later joined KKR and amassed 16 wickets in 12 games while maintaining an economy rate of only 7.06. His reinstatement to the Indian T20I team was also prompted by the impressive run.

Umesh experienced early success in 2010, but following those highs, the senior bowler experienced a plateau, which caused him to fall behind Bumrah, Shami, and Ishant in the pace department. Even at home without Bumrah, the wicketkeeper-batter noted that Shami and Ishant were the go-to pacers.

“You have to understand his roots. He is a coal miner’s son and tried being part of the police academy. That did not work out and then he went into fast bowling and his growth rate at that stage, from 2008, when he started playing for Vidarbha, he made it to the Indian team in 2010, that’s a growth fast rate. Then he kept going still at a certain point and then plateaued. When it happens to any cricketer, you feel hard done by. He is no different and he must have felt sad,” Dinesh Karthik said.

“When you have an attack like Bumrah and Shami, the third one was always between Ishant and Umesh and a lot other times it would be Ishant, Shami, and Umesh. But when they played two medium pacers in India it became Ishant and Shami at times” Dinesh Karthik added.

“Umesh Yadav was always overlooked at times”: Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik acknowledged that, despite taking wickets after being chosen, Umesh was unable to advance up that ladder and, as a result, was “always overlooked” in the Indian team. The former captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders then recalled that Umesh’s lowest point was going unsold in the 2022 IPL mega auction.

“He was always overlooked at times and that must have really hurt him because every time he came in he produced a two or three-wicket performance but was never good enough to hold on to that place. You know he was thrown out…I think the hardest time was when he was unsold at an auction. That must have hurt him really bad,” Dinesh Karthik said.

Umesh Yadav represented India in 55 Test matches, taking 168 wickets in red-ball cricket, including three five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul.
