Former opener Matthew Hayden was surprised by Australia’s aggressive batting in the second Test of the four-match series against India in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The visitors struggled against India’s spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin and lost nine wickets inside the first session of Day 3.

Australia began the first session of Day 3 with a score of 61 for the loss of one wicket. The Pat Cummins-led team kept attacking the Indian bowlers, which caused their downfall. The visitors were bowled out for just 113 runs, with left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja picking up seven wickets and veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin taking three wickets from the other end.

These Are World-Class Players – Matthew Hayden

The cricketer-turned-commentator Matthew Hayden said that he was shocked by the Australian team’s aggressive play in the second innings, calling it a disaster.

“These are world-class players, and they’ve got everything to win and everything to lose in this session. They did it so well last evening in those few overs. But what we’ve seen here is a disaster for Australia. They’ve gone way over the edge in terms of their aggressive play,” Hayden said in a commentary.

Ravindra Jadeja ran through the Australian middle order, registering his 12th five-wicket haul in the longer format of the game. The left-arm spinner registered his career-best figures in an inning of 7/42, which is his fifth five-wicket haul against the Aussies. Travis Head was the lead scorer with 43 runs, and Marnus Labuschagne scored 35 runs, while none of the other batters crossed the double-digit mark.

Australia, the No. 1 ranked Test team, topped the points table in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. The only scenario in which they miss their first WTC final is if they lose all four of their Tests in India and Sri Lanka win both of their matches in New Zealand. The final match is likely to be held between India and Australia, which is scheduled to be played on June 8 at the Oval in London.
