Despite awaiting information about whether Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green would be fit for the series, Australia has chosen an 18-person team for the Border-Gavaskar series in India, including 22-year-old Todd Murphy.

After a good start to his First Class career, off-spinner Murphy unites Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson as potential spin partners for Nathan Lyon. Adam Zampa was passed over in favour of Murphy and the other members of the spin club.

Todd Murphy Emerged As Strong Spin Option After Strong Domestic Performances: George Bailey

Todd Murphy’s selection, according to Australian Chairman of Selectors George Bailey, is a reference to his achievements for Australia A and the Prime Minister’s XI as well as to his excellent start in Sheffield Shield play.

Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A. With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option. Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development,” ICC quoted George Bailey as saying.

As Mitchell Starc, who is currently suffering from tendon damage to his left middle finger, won’t join the team until after the initial Test, Lance Morris, who was a member of Australia’s red-ball squad in the home series, keeps his spot and could possibly make his Test debut in Nagpur’s opening match.

Marcus Harris, a part of Australia’s squad for the home summer, will not be part of the touring team. Instead, batsmen Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw will assist the top six.

Despite suffering a fracture on his right index finger during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa, all-rounder Cameron Green, who is also battling time to recover, may play in the first Test.
