Team India might have lost the decider against Australia in Chennai but Shubman Gill managed to impress the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during his brief innings in the chase. Chasing 270 to win, Gill scored 37 off 49 balls and added a 65-run stand with his skipper Rohit Sharma.

The duo scored the runs in the first 10 overs and gave India a quick start. However, as it turned out, India were bowled out for 248 losing the game by 21 runs. In the process, they also conceded their first ODI series loss at home since 2019. In between, they won five series deciders.

During the fifth over of the Indian innings, Shubman Gill struck to back to back boundaries against Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc. The second one in particular had class written all over it as he hit the ball through the covers on the front foot. The shot was so good that it made even Virat Kohli jump out of his seat. Skipper Rohit also acknowledged the shot of his opener at the other end.

After a strong start, Rohit (30) and Shubman (37) fell in quick succession; KL Rahul (32) forged a 69-run stand alongside Virat Kohli (54) but things went downhill rather quickly following the dismissal of Rahul. India lost Axar Patel (2), Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav (0) in quick succession and eventually failed to chase down the target even as all-rounder Hardik Pandya (40) held one end alongside the tailenders. Ravindra Jadeja (18) and Mohammed Shami (14) tried their best as well but could not help India chase down the target.
