Former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli has once again showcased his remarkable batting prowess by scoring his 28th Test century during the fourth Test match against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. What makes this achievement more special is the manner in which he celebrated this century, which is eerily similar to the way he did in the 2018 Edgbaston Test match against England.
Kohli has had a relatively dry spell in Test cricket in recent times, with his last century coming against Bangladesh in November 2019. His form was a concern for India going into this series against Australia, but he has silenced his critics with his performance in this match. The Indian skipper had a slow start to his innings, but he batted with patience and determination, soaking up the pressure applied by the Australian bowlers.

The 34-year-old reached the three-figure mark by flicking a delivery from Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon into the gap for a single. Kohli removed his helmet and kissed his wedding ring, a gesture that he has made on several occasions in the past. He was congratulated by his teammate Axar Patel and acknowledged the applause from the crowd and his fellow players.
Kohli’s knock was praised by former Indian cricketer and commentator Ravi Shastri, who said “600kg Gorilla off his back”. This referred to the pressure that Kohli was under to perform in this Test match, as India needed a win to keep their hopes alive of reaching the World Test Championship final.

Virat Kohli’s 28th Test century puts him joint-seventeenth on the list of most Test centuries by a batsman, alongside former South African cricketer Hashim Amla and former Australian skipper Michael Clarke. Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), Ricky Ponting (41), and Kumar Sangakkara (38) lead the list.
The Indian team will be hoping that Virat Kohli’s century will help them to secure a victory in this Test match and win the series. The hosts were trailing Australia by 118 at the stroke of Lunch on Day 4, with six wickets in hand. Shreyas Iyer, who was injured while fielding, is unlikely to bat, which puts more pressure on Kohli and the lower-order batsmen to put up a good total on the board.
