SL vs IRE 2nd Test Match Preview:

Sri Lanka go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series as they won by innings and 280 runs in the first Test. It happens to be Sri Lanka’s biggest innings victory in Test cricket.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the home team batted brilliantly. The openers got off to a good start but the youngster Nishan Madushka couldn’t convert his start. Karunaratne and Mendis stitched a record 281-run stand for the second wicket, with both of them getting tons.

Ireland did trigger a mini collapse as Sri Lanka lost 5 wickets for 63, but Chandimal and Samarawickrama batted brilliantly and scored centuries as well to take the game further away from the visitors. Sri Lanka declared a massive score of 591/6.

In reply, Ireland had a very poor start as they lost 2 wickets within the second over. Tector and McCollum showed some resistance but it was soon broken by Jayasuriya.

He extracted turn and grip from the surface and ran through the opposition, taking a 7-wicket haul in the process. Tucker, who scored 45, was the highest scorer for the visitors. Ireland were bowled out for 143 and were asked to follow on when they were trailing by 448 runs.

In the second innings, they were reduced to 40/5 but Tector and Campher did put up a fight as they stitched a 60-run partnership. Tector threw his wicket away in search of a non-existent run and then the Lankan bowlers wrapped up the visitors for 168 and won by a massive 280-run margin.

For the home team, it was once again the spinners who ran through the Irish batters as Mendis took a 4-fer and Jayasuriya took a 3-fer. Prabath Jayasuriya was adjudged the player of the match for his 10-wicket haul. Sri Lanka will look to sweep the series 2-0, while the visitors would look to bounce back in the next match and level the series 1-1.
