The SL vs AFG 1st ODI 2023 will be played in Hambantota Sri Lanka on Friday, June 2. The Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan ODI series consists of three ODIs to be played between June 2-7 all in Hambantota. This is the second ODI series played between the two teams in a space of six months. 

Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have met often in recent times. Both teams faced each other in the Asia Cup first and then in the T20 World Cup. Once that was over, the two teams played a three-match ODI series in November 2022. The series ended 1-1 with the second ODI washed out due to rain.

Dasun Shakana will lead the 16-member Sri Lankan squad named by the board. Sri Lanka’s IPL stars are back for national duty. Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana won the IPL title with Chennai Super Kings. Shana played for Gujarat Titans coming in as a replacement for Kane Williamson. Wanindu Hasaranga had a disappointing season with RCB.

Mohammad Nabi stepped down as the Afghanistan skipper after the World Cup. Hasmatullah Shahidi will lead the side which also has the likes of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Fazalhaq Farooqi all of who played in the IPL recently. Having performed very well in the previous series against Sri Lanka last year, this is a good opportunity for this Afghan side to gather experience ahead of the ODI World Cup in India. Conditions are expected to remain more or less similar. Rashid Khan is out of the first two games with a lower back injury. He is expected to return for the final ODI on June 7.

Sri Lanka, are the winner of the Asia Cup earlier this year. They lost to Afghanistan to start their campaign and beat them once again in the Super 4 round. The two teams also met in the T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka beating Afghanistan by six wickets. Afghanistan played an ODI series against Sri Lank in November 2022 with the series ending 1-1.
