3 Former Indian Players Who Can Replace Rahul Dravid As India’s Coach For ODIs. The BCCI announced Rahul Dravid’s appointment as Ravi Shastri’s successor in an announcement on November 3, 2021. The three-match T20I series against New Zealand was his first assignment in his role. Since then, Rahul Dravid has returned with several memorable moments in bilateral series, but the Indian squad has struggled in major international tournaments.

First, the Men in Blue got knocked out from the Asia Cup 2022, and later on, it suffered a humiliating defeat by 10 wickets in the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 against England. If this was not enough, the Men in Blue lost the first and second ODI of the ongoing 3-match series against Bangladesh by 1 wicket and 5 runs respectively which further hurt the team’s cricket fans in a big manner.

The ODI series loss to Bangladesh couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Men in Blue as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have called for a review meeting in Mumbai.

After crashing out of T20 World Cup 2022 in the semifinals followed by back-to-back ODI series losses to New Zealand and Bangladesh, the BCCI office-bearers will meet captain Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid, NCA chief VVS Laxman and former captain Virat Kohli when the side returns to India from Bangladesh after the Test series.

The BCCI review meeting comes of the back of the Men in Blue’s five-run loss to Bangladesh in the second ODI on Wednesday (December 7) which means the Men in Blue have lost an ODI series to Bangladesh for the second time since 2015. The Men in Blue have not won a major ICC title since the 2013 Champions Trophy win.

A dicey yet good option, Virender Sehwag can formulate his style of play in the Men in Blue ODI team to attack till the opposition is knocked out. Virender Sehwag joined Kings XI Punjab as a mentor in 2016 before becoming the franchise’s head of operations in 2019.

Despite his resignation, the cricketer-turned-commentator continues to watch cricket and has shared his opinions via his famous one-liners on various social media channels. Since he knows the senior players quite well personally as all of them have been his juniors, the bonding aspect might not take as much time as his foreign counterparts.

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni is the most successful Men In Blue captain in the history of the game. The 41-year-old has won three major titles – 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy as well as a hoard of bilateral trophies. Although MS Dhoni hasn’t managed a team yet, his decision-making in the game and success point toward the national side’s team coaching in the future in ODIs and T20Is.

MS Dhoni is expected to retire after the IPL 2023, and take on a mentorship role with a specialized set of players. It is too taxing a task for Rahul Dravid to manage the three format teams all at once. The Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL title four times (in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021) all under MS Dhoni.  MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the IPL, having led the Chennai Super Kings to nine finals of which the team has won four.

Robin Singh

The most surprising pick in this list of outstanding coaches is 59-year-old Robin Singh. However, Robin Singh isn’t as inexperienced as it seems. He coached now defunct Deccan Chargers in IPL 2008 wherein he had a forgettable year as the team finished last.

After that, he was associated with the Mumbai Indians since 2010 as a head coach for three years and then as their batting coach. He was the fielding coach of India from 2007 to 2009 after a successful India A stint. Additionally, he was the head coach of Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) who have won and been runners-up in his regime.

He represented India in one Test and 136 ODIs between 1989 and 2001 as an all-rounder. This shows the expertise and experience of the former Indian all-rounder. Though a less of a name, he is a man who knows what is he doing and sticks to his plan, and more often than not, he gets the desired result.
