5 Indian Players Whose International Careers Will End If Chetan Sharma Remains The Chief National Selector.  BCCI recently sacked the Chetan Sharma selection committee after India’s poor performance in ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Chetan Sharma, Harvinder Singh, Sunil Joshi, and Debashish Mohanty were sacked by BCCI after the much-hyped Indian team failed to reach the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

India faced a humiliating 10-wicket loss to England in the semi-final. BCCI has also invited fresh applications for national selectors for the men’s team. BCCI is set to announce the new batch of selectors next week. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) are meeting on a date to shortlist the candidates. But with hardly any big names applying for the posts, Chetan Sharma is set to continue in the selection committee.

But with Venkatesh Prasad frontrunner to come in from South Zone, it is unlikely that Chetan would stay on as the chairman. The new selection committee will pick the Indian squad for India vs New Zealand series. New Selection Committee (Likely): Chairman: Venkatesh Prasad (South Zone), West Zone: Salil Ankola, East Zone: Shiv Sundar Das, North Zone: Chetan Sharma, Central Zone: Harvinder Singh

The sacked selection committee led by Chetan Sharma announced the squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka series starting January 3, 2023. Hardik Pandya takes the baton from Rohit Sharma in T20Is. However, a decision on the permanent move will only be made when new selectors come in. Hardik Pandya is likely to remain captain till the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The left-handed batter Venkatesh Iyer played against New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa, and Sri Lanka in late 2021-early 2022 after doing well for KKR in IPL 2021. However, after playing just 9 T20Is and 2 ODI games for India, he was removed from the national side.

He scored 24 runs in 2 ODI games and hit 133 runs in 7 T20I innings. He batted at a good average of 33.25 and a strike rate of 162+ in T20Is. The KKR’s opener scored 370 runs in 10 games for KKR averaging 41.11 in the UAE leg of the IPL 2021 which saw him playing for the Indian team.

Being a hard-hitting opener and a medium pacer bowler, he was seen as a powerful all-rounder for the Indian team. He may not get adequate games and his international career for the Indian team may end if Chetan Sharma remains the chief selector.

T Natarajan

T Natarajan is another such player on this list who became a victim of poor judgment of the Chetan Sharma selection committee. T Natarajan is a left-arm pacer who played his debut international games for the Indian team during India’s tour of Australia 2020-21.

He played in two campaigns, an away tour against Australia and a home series against England. In 1 Test, 2 ODIs, and 4 T20Is, he picked 3, 3, and 7 wickets. He also bowled at a good economy of 7+ in ODIs and T20Is.

Even after his good show, he was never given a chance in the national team post-March 2021. Being a left-arm medium pacer, T Natarajan could have emerged as a useful pacer for India. If Chetan Sharma remains chief selector, T Natarajan’s international career will end.

The national selectors once again neglected to include opening batsman Prithvi Shaw in the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. The two squads were revealed by the BCCI on Tuesday, December 27. His international career may end if Chetan Sharma remains the chief selector.

He has played only 5 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20I and has amassed 339 runs averaging 42.37 in Tests and 189 runs averaging 31.5 in ODIs. Prithvi Shaw last played for the Indian team in July on Sri Lanka 2021 tour and was out for a first-ball duck on his T20I debut (the only T20I he played). He has played 6 ODIs, scoring 189 runs and 5 Tests with 339 runs with one century to his name.

He was the 2nd highest run-getter with 332 runs averaging 36.88 in 10 games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23 at a strike rate of 181.42. With 315 runs, including two hundred and a fifty, he finished third highest run-getter in the Duleep Trophy. The opening batter’s strike rate of 92.92, was the highest in the competition among players who scored more than 21 runs.

Sarfaraz Khan

The right-handed batter is in form of his life as he had shown during the Duleep Trophy, Irani Trophy, and Ranji Trophy seasons. Sarfaraz Khan has been in incredible form, having scored runs for India A, Mumbai, and the Rest of India at the first-class level, but he wasn’t even picked for the Indian Test team even in the 2 Tests against low-ranked Bangladesh.

In 31 first-class matches, the right-handed batter has scored 2949 runs at an average of 77.6 with 10 hundreds and eight half-centuries. Sarfaraz Khan was the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy 2021-22, where Mumbai lost to Madhya Pradesh in the final.

In six matches, he scored 982 runs at an average of 122.75 with four centuries and two half-centuries to show for his efforts.  Sarfaraz Khan scored 928 runs in the 2019-20 edition of the Ranji Trophy and recorded 982 runs in the 2021-22 edition. His international career for the Indian team may end if Chetan Sharma remains the chief selector.

Shahbaz Ahmed

Shahbaz Ahmed wasn’t selected by the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee for the upcoming ODI or T20I series against Sri Lanka. The pace duo of Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar found a place in the Indian team for the T20I matches against Sri Lanka whereas on the other hand, the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Rajat Patidar were not considered for either of the series.

Bengal all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed made his ODI debut for India against South Africa in October and featured in the first ODI against Bangladesh as well, but surprisingly now he has been dropped and is not selected in either of the white-ball squad.

He has picked 3 scalps in 3 ODIs averaging 41.66 and didn’t get many chances with the bat. He should’ve been given more opportunities and his international career for the Indian team may end if Chetan Sharma remains the chief selector.
