The narrative of New Zealand with ‘5 million population’ overcoming the odds to win against India, a country of 1.3 billion people, has been peddled constantly ever since the Kane Williamson-led BlackCaps beat Team India in the final of the World Test Championship final last month.

Former Pakistan captain and their current Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has now joined the bandwagon.

Khan, during an interaction with Chinese journalists on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), used the same population disparity logic to taunt Team India for their defeat to New Zealand in the summit clash of the inaugural World Test Championship.

Khan went in to laud New Zealand’s cricket system, stating that the triumph was possible because of the manner in which the Kiwis nurture and optimize their talent.

“A small country like New Zealand of 5 million people has just won the World Test Championship against India which has 1.3 billion people. This is because they have a very good system of bringing up talent and polishing that talent,” said Imran Khan.

New Zealand, under the leader of Kane Williamson, won their second ICC title after a gap of 21 years courtesy of a thoroughly professional performance against Virat Kohli’s India.

The win was set up by their unrelenting seam-bowling attack that knocked over India for 170 in the second innings on the sixth and final day of the Test.

The required target of 139 in 53 overs was easily achieved thanks to a matured unbeaten 3rd wicket-stand between skipper Kane Williamson and veteran Ross Taylor amid bright sunshine in the final hour of the decisive clash.
