5 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma Should Be Sacked As India’s Captain. BCCI is not happy with head coach Rahul Dravid too as fans demand the sacking of his and Indian captain Rohit Sharma after the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee was fired following India’s poor performance in T20 World Cup 2022 (where India lost in the semis). India also performed poorly in the recently concluded Bangladesh ODIs (which India lost 1-2).

The 35-year-old might leave the role of captaincy from the 50-over format following the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023. Apparently, Rohit Sharma will remain captain in ODIs and Tests for the time being. However, Hardik Pandya is likely to take charge of the T20I team until the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA.

5 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma Should Be Sacked As India’s Captain

1. Form And Fitness

Rohit Sharma hasn’t been in the best of form with the bat in T20Is. Consistent breaks due to fitness and rotation policy too haven’t helped the Hitman either, to get back to his destructive best. Hence BCCI may sack him as a skipper considering his poor recent form and fitness.

Rohit Sharma averaged only 24.3 in 29 T20Is in 2022. He had a poor T20 World Cup 2022, scoring only 116 runs in 6 T20Is averaging a mere 19.33 at a pathetic strike rate of 106.42.

2. Adequate Indian Openers Available

No one is irreplaceable, and neither is Rohit Sharma. The current pool of Indian youngsters provides the national selectors with enough options and alternatives to replace the Mumbaikar.

Also, if India aims to emulate England’s model of success, they need to provide openers like Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shubman Gill with enough chances before the next T20 World Cup 2024 arrives. Hence BCCI may sack Rohit Sharma as skipper considering the availability of several talented youngster openers on the bench.

3. Poor Captaincy In Recent Matches

Under Rohit Sharma, India won 13 games and lost 5 out of 18 matches in ODIs. In T20Is India won 39 matches out of 51, losing the remaining 12. But his captaincy hasn’t been up to the mark recently, as India lost to Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2022 in T20Is in the Super 4 stage while also losing to England in the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup by 10 wickets.

India also lost both the first two ODIs against Bangladesh under his captaincy before a dislocated thumb injury ruled him out of the 3rd inconsequential ODI. Hence BCCI may sack Rohit Sharma as skipper considering their poor captaincy in recent matches.

4. Overburden Of Captaincy Affecting Form

BCCI may request Rohit Sharma to step down from either T20I or Test captaincy which could reduce a lot of the burden off his shoulders. This could also help him focus more on piling on the runs in the ODI format with the 2023 ODI World Cup to be played in India in less than a year’s time.

5. India May Go With Split Captaincy

Few had previously questioned if India should go the England way, but the idea of split captaincy was always brushed aside by the BCCI. However, the new selection committee is likely to be mandated to choose captains across three formats.

Rohit Sharma might retain his captaincy post for ODIs and Test cricket while Hardik Pandya could be looked at as a T20I captain till the 2024 T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies. In case Rohit Sharma is injured or unavailable, Shikhar Dhawan or KL Rahul, or even Rishabh Pant may get a chance to lead. Shikhar Dhawan, an ODI specialist, had led India in 12 ODIs with India winning 7 and losing 3 (2 were abandoned due to rain).
