Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has shared his views on Sanju Samson‘s return to India’s ODI team for the upcoming tour of South Africa. India will tour the African country this month for a full-fledged series that will end next month.

India are scheduled to play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests against the Proteas. One of the highlights of the recently-announced squads was the selection of Sanju Samson. Not many were expecting Sanju Samson to earn a recall from the selectors after the recent setbacks he faced.

He failed to make the cut for the Asia Cup, World Cup as well and the Asian Games where a second-string Indian team participated. There was no place for him in the squad for the ongoing T20I series against Australia. However, the selectors have made it clear that the batsman still features in their plans and have named him in the ODI squad.

AB de Villiers on Sanju Samson’s selection:

Sanju Samson will be aiming to make the most of the opportunity and perform well to cement his spot in the ODI team. A good outing in the challenging conditions of South Africa will definitely boost his chances. And ahead of the tour, AB de Villiers has said that the Kerala star would enjoy the fast and bouncy wickets of South Africa.

While the South African great stated that most of the batters will be tested in South African conditions, Sanju Samson might enjoy his time in the African country.

“It’s great to see him in the team. He will enjoy the South African wickets. He stands tall when he bats. There’s a bit of bounce and movement and all the batters will be tested.”

“But someone like Sanju, I think, will do well. And he also gives you an option with the gloves,” AB de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

India’s squad for 3 ODIs: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, Rajat Patidar, Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (C)(wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar.
