India’s bowling coach, Bharat Arun heaps high praises for Ajinkya Rahane, who led India’s comeback in the recently concluded victorious Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Regular captain, Virat Kohli returned home after the Adelaide Test, which India lost in humiliating fashion – the visitors were bowled out for their lowest ever Test total.

However, Ajinkya Rahane, Kohli’s deputy, took the charge and led an injury-riddled team to a historic series triumph. Rahane led from the front with his bat scoring a century in Melbourne. After a hard-fought draw in Sydney, India breached the ‘Fortress Gabba’ to take the series 2-1.

Bharat Arun opines on the comparisons between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane that were bound to follow the series triumph. Arun speaks on the different styles of captaincy and styles of the two stalwarts.

He points out that Rahane always seems calm and unanimated, much in the contrast with Kohli. However, the vice-captain is a strong character in the dressing room. The bowling coach says Rahane backs the bowlers even after they go for runs and the bowler feels trusted by him.

“When it comes to Ajinkya, he is a calm person. Rahane might look calm from the outside but there is a steely nerve in him. He backs players and looks calm and even if a bowler goes wrong, he might not be scared of the captain. He knows that he will be backed,” Bharat Arun said on off-spinner R Ashwin’s YouTube channel.

Kohli might look angry, but that’s just his energy: Bharat Arun

The 58-year-old also speaks about the attitude of Virat Kohli, which people sometimes criticize. Arun says that Kohli’s aggression and reactions to the bowlers bowling badly are often misunderstood to be anger. However, Arun believes that it is just his energy and passion are reflected.

Bharat Arun, who played 2 Tests and 4 ODI for his national team, has observed Rahane as someone who will stick to his plans and executes them to perfection more often than not. India is unbeaten under Rahane as the skipper – 4 wins, 1 draw. Virat Kohli is set to return to the eleven and lead the side against Joe Root’s England in a 4-match home Test series commencing on 5th February.

“With Virat Kohli, if you bowl two bad balls, it might look like he will get angry, but that’s just his energy. Ajinkya brings the calmness, of course, even if he buys-in the plan, he makes sure he executes it to the T,” Arun added.
