Veteran India National Cricket Team batter Ajinkya Rahane is all set to make a comeback to competitive cricket in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, as per a report in TOI. The Duleep Trophy 2022 is scheduled to be played in Tamil Nadu from September 8 to September 25.

The 34-year-old has been out of action for a while now. He was last seen in action on May 14 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, where he represented Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), before getting ruled out of the IPL 2022 due to an injury.

Former Team India skipper Rahane last played international cricket on the India tour of South Africa 2021-2022. He played all three Test games against South Africa National Cricket Team and scored just 136 runs in 6 innings at a poor average of 22.66.

After his poor performance with the bat for an extended period of time, he was dropped from the Indian Test team ahead of the home series against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team.

I think Ajinkya Rahane will play for West Zone in Duleep Trophy and take it from thereon – BCCI official

A senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official said that Rahane has been out of action for a very long time and he will not be picked in India A squad. The official added that Rahane is expected to play for West Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

“Rahane hasn’t played any cricket of late and hence straightaway the selectors won’t put him in India A with lot of performers waiting. I think he will play for West Zone in Duleep Trophy and take it from thereon,” a senior BCCI official privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Also, Ajinkya Rahane is not in India’s scheme of things for the Bangladesh tour in December. However, if he performs well in the next Ranji Trophy he might be back in the mix for the home series against Australia, as per the same TOI report. Rahane has also committed to play a full season for Mumbai and captain the side in the domestic season.
