Ajinkya Rahane Showed A Lot Of Character And Skill, I Think We Should Back Him – Pravin Amre

Former Indian cricketer Pravin Amre believes that the senior Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane who has shown a lot of character and skill needs to be backed by the management ahead of the South Africa tour.

The India tour of South Africa is scheduled to begin from December 26 at the SuperSport Park, Centurion and the teams will play three Tests and three ODIs.

Meanwhile, with the good performances of middle-order batters Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer, and the consistently poor performance of Ajinkya Rahane a lot of questions have been raised over Rahane’s place in the Indian team. In 2021, the 33-year-old Rahane has played 12 Tests and has scored 411 runs at an average of just 19.57.

Also, Ajinkya Rahane has lost his role as vice-captain in the Indian Test team and he has been succeeded by Rohit Sharma in the vice-captaincy.

However, both Rohit and Rahane won’t be Virat Kohli’s deputy in the South Africa Test series as KL Rahul is set to be the vice-captain after Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out of the Test series.

Former Indian batsman Amre said that a player cannot score a century in every Test match and Rahane has scored good runs for the Indian team in the overseas Tests.

He highlighted that Rahane smashed a match-winning century in Australia after India’s horror show in the Adelaide Test and stated that Rahane “should receive full backing from the team management.”

“To be honest, one cannot score a century in every Test match. Forties and fifties, and partnerships are very important for the team. It was difficult to get runs in the home Tests against England that India played early this year. Most batters could not score, and we have been harsh on these players,” Amre told News18. 

“He (Rahane) has scored runs abroad. After being shot out for 36 (at Adelaide), he scored a century, led the team well and won the series. He showed a lot of character and skill. I think we should back him.

“All big players have gone through a lean patch. A batter like him cannot see a sword over his head every time he goes out to bat. Rahane has scored 4795 runs in Test cricket and hence he should receive full backing from the team management.”
